Just last month, I bought myself a book called: “The Little Book Of Hygge, Danish Secrets To Happy Living” by Meik Wiking. What I thought is going to be an easy read before sleep- turned out as a complete shift in the way I see and do things in my day.
Let me begin by explaining what is Hygge (ˈh(y)o͞oɡə )?
Hygge has been called everything from “the art of creating intimacy”, “coziness of the soul”, and “absence of annoyance”, to “taking pleasure from the presence of soothing things”, “cozy togetherness”, and my personal favorite, “cocoa by the candlelight”.
In today’s fast pacing world (where my next meltdown could be just behind the corner) I found that the “absence of annoyance”- resonates the best with me, especially when it comes to sewing.
So with that being said, I present to you few things to make your sewing experience more hygge:
1. Clean the space
There is no better feeling, than starting your new project in a freshly cleaned space. Far away from old pieces of fabric, pattern pieces that only God knows where belong and overfilled trash bin around your legs. Removing anything that annoys you from your sight is probably the first step for cozy and calming sewing experience.
2. Make yourself a cup of tea
I bet my sewing machine, that every person when thinking about coziness, have a picture of themselves with a mug in their hands. Make tea drinking a ritual and create a habit, every time you sit and sew- have your favorite mug next to you. You can explore new flavors and origins and make it truly your special time.
3. Light up the candle
Okay, if you read the book- you’ll see that atmosphere is the most important aspect of hygge living. And the best way to enhance it, is through the candles. They don’t even have to be scented, just their soft yellow light is enough to calm you down, make you warm and brings you happiness.
4. Do your nails
This one is totally random- I know. But think about it. When you sew, what do you look at, most of the time? You look at your hands. And having your nails done, while working on your project- gives new meaning to the word “satisfaction”. It doesn’t have to be a salon visit, just a glittery nail polish or a simple trim could so the job just fine. Try it and you’ll see.
5. Something sweet
Of course this one would come next! I mean, you have the candle lit, you have your nails done, your tea next to you, and what is missing? Yap, something sweet! It could be milk chocolate, sugar free candy or a piece of fruit- whatever is your thing. The only thing that is important is, that you like it and it makes you happy <3
6. Play a movie
Okay, this one is just me. I really like to play a movie (that I already watched) while I sew- It just makes it more fun. And because I’ve already seen it, I can just listen to it and do what I want to do. Some of my favorite sewing movies are: “The Addams Family”, “The Dressmaker”, “Shrek” and “Harry Potter”.
These are just some of the things I like to do to embrace hygge into my life. Of course there is much more to play with, like: inviting your friend to sew together, wrapping yourself with a big blanket, soft pillow under your booty , glass of wine… It doesn’t have to be expensive- just cozy.
What are your ways to make yourself feel comfy and amazing?
Thank you so much for stopping by <3
